The Real 16 Types

Model A

Model A shows how the eight information aspects are organized within a socionic type. Each aspect occupies one of eight Functions.

The information aspect describes what kind of information is processed. The Function describes how that information operates within the type.

Every type contains all eight information aspects. What changes is their position. This arrangement affects how naturally, confidently, flexibly, or receptively each kind of information is processed.

The Eight Functions

1. Leading / Base

The central Function of the type. It forms the core of the person’s worldview, natural expertise, and strongest area of confidence. It operates continuously and with little conscious effort.

It is also called the Program or Primary Function in some sources.

2. Creative

The Function of flexible implementation and productive realization. It adapts information from the Leading Function to the situation and turns it into practical responses, explanations, decisions, or actions.

3. Role

A learned and effortful Function used for social adaptation. A person can demonstrate situational competence here, especially when circumstances require it, but this usually feels less natural and secure.

4. Vulnerable

The most sensitive and uncertain Function. The person may lack confidence in this area, avoid excessive demands related to it, or react strongly to criticism and pressure.

It is also known as the Point of Least Resistance, or PoLR.

5. Suggestive

A receptive Function connected with natural openness and curiosity. Information in this area is often welcomed from other people and can provide a sense of support, balance, or orientation.

It is also called the Dual-Seeking Function.

6. Activating

A motivational and aspirational Function. Encouragement in this area can mobilize the person, increase confidence, and support development.

It is also called the Mobilizing Function.

7. Limiting

A strong observational Function used to recognize limits, restrict excess, set boundaries, and prevent unnecessary activity. It often serves as a reliable backup tool rather than a primary area of expression.

It is also called the Restrictive or Ignoring Function.

8. Background

A strong and effortless Function that works fluidly and often remains unnoticed by the person. Its abilities are usually demonstrated through action rather than emphasized or explained in words.

It is also called the Demonstrative Function.

Function Numbers and Short Notation

The number and the name refer to the same functional position. For example, Function 1 and the Leading / Base Function are interchangeable ways of describing one position.

A short notation combines the two-letter aspect code with the Function number:

  • Ne1 — Ne in Function 1
  • Ti2 — Ti in Function 2
  • Fi4 — Fi in Function 4

This makes it possible to identify both the information aspect and its role in the model with a compact label.

Valued and Non-Valued Functions

The tinted cells in the example represent the valued Functions:

  • Functions 1, 2, 5, and 6

The untinted cells represent the non-valued Functions:

  • Functions 3, 4, 7, and 8

Valued Functions reflect the kinds of information that the type naturally prioritizes, seeks, and responds to. Non-valued Functions may still be strong and highly capable, but they are less central to the type’s preferred orientation.

Dimensionality and value are separate characteristics. In the ENTP Inventor model, Si5 is valued but 1D, while Te8 is non-valued but 4D.

Function Dimensionality

Function dimensionality describes how many different parameters a Function can take into account when processing information through its information aspect.

The four dimensions build on one another. Dimensionality is not simply strength or an amount of knowledge: a person can accumulate substantial knowledge and experience through a lower-dimensional Function.

Personal experience

A 1D Function relies primarily on personally accumulated experience. It can become experienced in familiar situations, but transferring that experience to substantially different conditions is more difficult.

Personal experience + learned norms

A 2D Function can also use learned rules, social norms, examples, instructions, and established methods. It can learn from other people’s experience rather than needing to discover everything personally.

Personal experience + norms + the situation

A 3D Function can account for the specific conditions of the situation. Rather than depending only on previously learned rules or methods, it can modify them or create an appropriate solution for the particular case.

4D

Globality

Functions 1 and 8

Personal experience + norms + situation + globality / change over time

A 4D Function can account for experience, norms, and situational variation while operating from a broader, integrated understanding of the aspect. Its judgments are not tied to one particular situation and can remain applicable across changing conditions and over time.

Example: How much salt should I add?

The task and information aspect stay the same. What changes is the range of parameters the Function can use.

1D Personal Experience

Someone regularly makes the same chicken soup in the same pot, with roughly the same amount of chicken and water, and has learned that one teaspoon of salt works. If the amount of water changes substantially, or the chicken is already salted or smoked, the familiar experience may no longer show how much salt to use.

2D Norms

The person can use a recipe, look up recommended proportions, follow cooking instructions, or ask an experienced cook how much salt to use. They can rely on learned norms and other people’s accumulated experience.

3D Situation

The person considers the actual situation: the size of the pot, the amount of water, the ingredients, and whether the meat is already salty. They adjust accordingly—for example, adding some salt, tasting, and adjusting again—instead of relying on one fixed proportion.

4D Globality

The person can take in the whole dish—ingredients, amount of liquid, proportions, and existing saltiness—and intuitively add approximately the right amount without a fixed measurement or repeated tasting. The point is integrated command of the aspect, not memorizing more rules.

Model A Across All 16 Types

Every socionic type uses the same eight functional positions and the same eight information aspects. The difference lies in how those aspects are arranged.

Changing the position of an information aspect changes its role within the type, while the basic meaning of the aspect remains the same.
